Interview with Katie Sise

Katharine “Katie” Sise is a New York City based author, jewelry designer and television host. Years ago, at age twenty-four— after dropping a rare and very expensive bottle of champagne on her way to deliver it to Robert De Niro’s table—she realized she needed a way to fund her acting and writing career that didn’t involve balancing a tray full of cocktails. That fall, she taught herself to make jewelry and launched Katharine Sise Jewelry. Within a few months, Lucky Magazine called her a “Designer to Watch” and her company appeared in every major fashion magazine—including Vogue, W, Elle, Self, Lucky, InStyle, Bazaar, Allure, Us Weekly, People, In Touch, Page Six Magazine, Real Simple, FN, Life and Style, Teen Vogue, Seventeen, Women’s Wear Daily, Marie Claire and Glamour. Before she knew it, her celebrity clientele included Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Kelly Ripa, Ellen Pompeo, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Beyonce Knowles, Anne Hathaway and Drew Barrymore.

Why did you want to write this book?
I wanted to tell a story about a very bright girl who suffered a great loss, and who uses her smarts to try to regain the fearless part of her she lost.

Favorite part of being a writer?
It’s so much fun creating a fictional world for a living, and especially falling in love with your characters.

And the worst?
The criticism being so public. It isn’t like a normal office job, where a boss pulls you into her office to tell you you did something wrong. When you’re a writer, criticism is out there for everyone to see.

Which character from The Boyfriend App is closest to you?

Have you got your own place to write or can you write anywhere?
One of my favorite things about writing is that I can do it anywhere. I love that I can be on vacation and bring my laptop. My favorite place to write is in coffee shops. It reminds me of being younger, when I wrote in coffee shops and dreamed about doing this for a living.

Any tips for writer’s block?
Go see creative work that most inspires you: like an art exhibit or a play. For me, I feel most inspired at the movies. A good movie can get me ready to write every time.

Apart from writing what do you love doing?
Being with my family.

What’s the perfect cure to a bad day?
A conversation with my husband, my mom, my sister, or anyone in my family who knows how to put things in perspective.

If you could, what would you want to ask your readers?
I’d ask them what book they’d like to read next!

What happens next?
I’m writing the next app book. It’s early in the writing process, so I don’t have too many details yet, but I’m really excited.

Quick-Fire Round:

Do you ever re-arrange book displays in bookshops?
No. I swear!

Tea or Coffee?
Coffee. Coffee. Coffee.

Favorite place?
Cape Cod.

Can you recommend a book to read?
How to Love, by Katie Cotugno. I have the galley, and it’s being published this fall. Do not miss it: it’s incredible!

What word describes you best?

You’re at the airport with a free pass to get on any plane – where would you go?
Bali or Thailand

Last film you saw at the cinema?
Zero Dark Thirty.

One thing you couldn’t write without?

Who would you point the Boyfriend App 2.0 at?
I think I can only point it at my husband, but if he gave me permission, I’d point it at Leonardo DiCaprio.

And finally, what is the question you wish people would ask and never do?
I never thought about it! But let’s see. I’d love someone to ask me who’d I’d most love to read the book. And if someone asked me that, I’d say my grandmother, who passed away when I was twenty. I hope she’d love it.
