My top 5 #winterreads by Harriet Whitehorn | The Conspiracy of Magic

A a short while ago I was part of The Conspiracy of Magic #bookstagramtour – I thought I’d share Harriet Whitehorn guest post here as well. Since you might appreciate the book recommendations in time for Christmas.

Harriet Whitehorn is the author of the VIOLET books, a middle-grade detective series from Simon and Schuster. Titles include VIOLET AND THE PEARL OF THE ORIENT, and VIOLET AND THE SMUGGLERS. The books have been nominated for several awards, including the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the Sainsbury’s Children’s Book Award. Before becoming a full-time writer, Harriet worked in building conservation. Harriet lives in London with her husband and three daughters.

My top 5 winter reads by Harriet Whitehorn

The Wolves of Willoughby Chase by Joan Aiken

This is probably my favourite children’s book.  It has pretty much everything you could ask for – adventure, ice skating, secret passages, orphanages, evil baddies along with a large dollop of female friendship – all in a deliciously wintry setting.

Tintin in Tibet by Herge

I try to sneak a Tintin book onto any list of favourites, as  there was nothing I loved more as a child than lying on my bed  reading a Tintin book, preferably while eating a curly wurly.  And this is one of Herge’s best with a telepathic Tintin, a shy yeti and levitating Buddhist monks.

The Wolf Princess by Cathryn Constable

Another wolfish one – I read this to my daughter a few years ago and loved it.  Deeply atmospheric with a great plot  and well drawn heroine, it’s a brilliant winter read.

A Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos

This YA book really blew me away  – incredible world building, great characters, and a brilliant plot.  I’m sure it will go on to be considered a modern classic.

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas by Dr Seuss

I think this is the perfect Christmas book – every Christmas message is condensed down into one faultless little fable starring the fantastic Grinch and his “great grinchy trick”.

In a world where magic is so powerful it has been outlawed, Cass is a rare creature – an obtuse, someone who is unaffected by magic. But what has always felt like a handicap becomes a strength when sorcerers and magicians begin to perform magical deceptions with malicious intent. The Queen of Minaris is in grave danger and it’s up to Cass to protect her. But how can Cass defeat the sinister magician behind it all with no powers herself?

A thrilling tale of bravery and ingenuity from Harriet Whitehorn, author of the VIOLET series, for fans of COGHEART, NEVERMOOR and THE GIRL OF INK AND STARS.
