Bloodlust and Bonnets by Emily McGovern

Set in early nineteenth-century Britain, Bloodlust & Bonnets follows Lucy, an unworldly debutante who desires a life of passion and intrigue—qualities which earn her the attention of Lady Violet Travesty, the leader of a local vampire cult.

But before Lucy can embark on her new life of vampiric debauchery, she finds herself unexpectedly thrown together with the flamboyant poet Lord Byron (“from books!”) and a mysterious bounty-hunter named Sham. The unlikely trio lie, flirt, fight, and manipulate each other as they make their way across Britain, disrupting society balls, slaying vampires, and making every effort not to betray their feelings to each other as their personal and romantic lives become increasingly entangled.

Both witty and slapstick, elegant and gory, Emily McGovern’s debut graphic novel pays tribute to and pokes fun at beloved romance tropes, delivering a joyous, action-packed world of friendship and adventure.

Review: The blurb promised many a splendid thing and in many ways Bloodlust and Bonnets by Emily McGovern delivered just that. Having enjoyed My Life As a Background Slytherin I was excited about Emily’s debut graphic novel and there are certainly elements from Emily’s web comic that translate well.

The story opens with Lucy, a debutante who within the first few panels dispatches of her fiancé, a bunch of vampires, meets Lord Byron “from book!” and gets an enticing invitation from Lady Travesty.

Personally, I loved the castle best. The story is witty, full of quirky characters and packed of story. There is a lot Bloodlust and Bonnets and sometimes it feels like a bit much because you can get lost but as a whole, I think this is an excellent debut and if you enjoy the style of Emily’s previous work then this will be right for you.

Author Information
Emily was born in the UK but grew up in Brussels, where she attended the European School of Brussels II, studying Art as a main subject and receiving a 90% mark in the Baccalaureate. After graduating, she began a Foundation Art Diploma course at London College of Fashion, which she instantly disliked, finding the course dull and lacking any actual teaching. She studiously avoided any fashion, and instead spent her time making hand-drawn animations and weird paintings of witches. Although she found the course boring, her drawing skills leapt. She began a BA degree in Russian Studies at University College London and spent a year in Russia working in a rural commune, where she ran a weekly art “gathering” for the kids. The year abroad allowed her to go to many Russian art galleries, which were a revelation to her – artists such as Vereshchagin and Vasnetsov she found influenced her greatly. She graduated with First Class Honours and by 2016 was building a comic driven social media platform based around the regular posting of her ‘My Life as a Background Slytherin’ comic. Bloodlust & Bonnets is her first graphic novel.
