A little while ago I received an email from Melissa at Literary Book Gifts. She makes high quality gifts for book lovers and asked if I wanted to share some information about her bookish merchandise and offer a promo code for my followers. Obviously I said yes!
I’ve ordered my own t-shirt from Melissa (it took a while to narrow it down!) and it’s the Emily Dickinson T-Shirt in indigo (link here). I’m super excited for it’s arrival.
If you want to order t-shirts or tote bags you can use promo code LLL20 for 20% off anything in the store, there is no minimum and does not expire. How awesome is that!!!

Interview with Literary Book Gifts
Tell us a little about literarybookgifts.com?
Literary Book Gifts is an online shop that specializes in shirts and totes for book lovers. The collection has a wide range of titles and authors available, showcasing everything from Shakespeare to Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women.
What made you jump from ‘thinking about’ to ‘doing’ for creating your business?
I’d been considering for a while putting a few of my book related designs onto something that others could appreciate. I had made a Dracula and Moby Dick design but I couldn’t decide what to do with them. I’ve had a lot of fun in the past selling items from around the house whether at garage sales or online, so I thought it would be great idea to try to open up an online store. After a some design processing I was able to get my designs print ready for shirts and totes. When I saw how some of them looked in store I was pretty excited and this solidified my decision to make these available and launch the business.
How do you create a design (the process steps)?
First I start with the title or author, I scope out what would be a valuable addition to the collection. Next I consider the themes of the story, is it a romance? Horror? Adventure? After that I have a look around to see if there are any old book covers that suit it, I was rather surprised to find that only some book covers really capture the essence of the novel. Many are quite random, generic, or just ugly. In this case I expand my search to include antique illustrations. After I find one or a few suitable illustrations I remaster them to fit the novel. I next choose typography, colors, and composition. Finally, I get design ready to be printed and sometimes add some distressing or other effects.
What makes your bookish merchandise special?
Having the store online allows for not only a wide selection of designs, but also a wide variety of color and size options. I think it is just as important as the design itself for the color and size of the shirt to fit. Choosing a grey shirt gives off quite a different effect than a light pink version. The shirts come in sizes S to 5XL for men, and XS to 3XL for women, so everyone can choose the size that fits them best.
Do you secretly have favourites?
Yes, I certainly do! I very much love the Marcel Proust T-Shirt and I am especially happy with the fact that the swan refers to one of the volumes, Swann’s Way. I am also pleased with how the Ulysses design turned out, I think the composition and use of negative space really bring the piece together.
