Girl Hearts Girl by Lucy Sutcliffe #BlogTour

Girl Hearts Girl

An inspiring, uplifting and sympathetic story about sexuality and self-acceptance, Lucy Sutcliffe’s debut memoir is a personal and moving coming out story.

In 2010, at seventeen, Lucy Sutcliffe began an online friendship with Kaelyn, from Michigan. They began a long distance relationship, finally meeting in 2011. Lucy’s video montage of their first week spent together was the first in a series of vlogs documenting their long-distance relationship.

Now, for the first time, Lucy’s writing about the incredible personal journey she’s been on.

Review: Holding my hand up here. I’d never heard of Lucy Sutcliffe before this book (sorry Lucy!) so I actually did the YouTube research partway through reading Girl Hearts Girl. Would knowing more about Lucy and Kaelyn have added to my enjoyment of this book? I don’t know. I feel I got to know Lucy Sutcliffe through her words, not her videos, and I think those words were all I needed.

Lucy tells her story chronologically. Sharing her uncertainty and anxiety, key moments that made her. Her love for reading (bonus points), how awesome Hermione is (more points), plus JK Rowling quotes (and yet more points!). How important her friends and family were, the reminder that some people will always be idiots and how she dealt/deals with them.

I really liked Lucy’s narration voice. It’s engaging and friendly – like you’ve been invited round for a cuppa, handed a cat and she’s telling you about her life. As the reader you feel like she could be your friend and somebody that will fight your corner. I think it’s that reassurance, which is repeated throughout the text that will resonate with many readers. You’re reading about somebody who understands.
