Eleanor is the new girl in town, and with her chaotic family life, her mismatched clothes and unruly red hair, she couldn’t stick out more if she tried.
Park is the boy at the back of the bus. Black T-shirts, headphones, head in a book – he thinks he’s made himself invisible. But not to Eleanor… never to Eleanor.

Slowly, steadily, through late-night conversations and an ever-growing stack of mix tapes, Eleanor and Park fall for each other. They fall in love the way you do the first time, when you’re young, and you feel as if you have nothing and everything to lose.

Thoughts before you started reading Eleanor and Park?

CHRISSI: Another hyped book. Is it going to be worth the read? My expectations are pretty high!

LUNA: I bought this on recommendation from a friend, or rather because she’d heard so much about it. It sounded promising enough.

What did you think of Eleanor and Park as characters?

CHRISSI: I thought Eleanor and Park were both likeable characters. They both have issues that are easy for many people to relate to.

LUNA: Liked them both, but Eleanor was my favourite. I related to her more.

Best bit?

CHRISSI: I absolutely loved the comic sharing moments. I like that reading brought them closer together. I really like Rainbow Rowell’s writing style. I can’t wait to read Attachments and Fangirl.

LUNA: That Eleanor and Park relationship took time to grow. I really believed that these two characters were in love. Plus I wanted to ‘high 5’ Park’s father when he told Park he could go and rescue Eleanor.

Worst bit?

CHRISSI: I don’t think the ending was as good as it could’ve been. I thought it seemed quite rushed and I would’ve liked to have known what happened to Eleanor and Park. An epilogue would’ve been good!

LUNA: Eleanor’s home life was awful and I couldn’t muster any sympathy or understanding for Elanor’s mother. Pretty much wanted to yell at both of her parents.

Favourite character / moment?

CHRISSI: I’m a fan of Park. I thought he was a great character. I loved when he used the taekwondo against Steve. I also loved how music was heavily involved in the story.

LUNA: Eleanor, (ohh my – I’m not agreeing with Chrissi *gasp*) she was believable, strong yet vulnerable.

Was Eleanor and Park what you expected?

CHRISSI: Sort of. I expected a love story which was incredibly sweet. I didn’t expect the amount of darkness in the story. It certainly wasn’t a bright read.

LUNA: Hmm, I was expecting a cute story and this definitely isn’t but I thought it was well written book with a touching story. So in a way it was as good as expected just not cute and sweet.

Would you recommend it?

CHRISSI: I would. It’s an easy to read book which I think fans of contemporary fiction would love!

LUNA: Absolutely

  1. Great discussion! I have to agree with Chrissi, Park was definitely my favorite. I actually couldn’t relate to Eleanor that well, so I ended up not liking her much at all. 😦
