Dead Time by Anne Cassidy

How did I get the book?
Huge thank you to Michelle from MuchLovedBooks for sending me this.

Genre: Mystery

Additional: I had a review copy of Killing Rachel (book 2) but it became very apparent that without reading Dead Time I wouldn’t be able to follow the story.

Synopsis: Rose and Joshua first met when Joshua and his dad came to live with Rose and her mum. Then their world turns upside down when their mother and father go out for dinner one evening and never return. With police inquiries going nowhere, Rose is dispatched to live with her chilly, unfriendly grandmother and Joshua is sent to live with his uncle. Then Joshua comes to London to study and Rose is witness to not one, but two murders. Why is this happening to Rose? Can it be anything to do with the investigations Joshua has been doing into the disappearance of their parents? A taut and pacy thriller that is the start of a stylish new series from an acclaimed writer for teens.

200words (or less) review:  When I finished Dead Time my first thought was: I’m missing something. So many of the reviewers I follow really loved this book and I can’t muster the same feelings.

Dead Time starts with Rose witnessing the murder of one of the boys who attends her colleague. The boy in question apparently had gang associations and a large of Dead Time deal with this murder and the events that follow. At the same time the reader also has the mystery of Rose and Josh’s disappearing parents. That particular storyline is frequently referenced but doesn’t develop as much as you’d expect by the end of this book.

While reading I couldn’t decide what Anne Cassidy wanted the reader to focus on. Both mysteries are there but neither has priority. There isn’t a lot of character detail for Rose and Josh, you only really have their actions (and interactions) in the present to focus on and for me both characters didn’t make very good impressions.

I finished reading Dead Time because I wanted to know if I’d guessed the ending right (and in some ways I had) but I don’t think I’ll be continuing with the series.

Recommend it?

Not sure

  1. Hrm, interesting that you had to read this one first in order to get to that second one, and now you don’t even want to read the second one. That sucks!
