When It Happens by Susane Colasanti

click meHow did I get the book?  I bought it.

Genre: Contemporary

Synopsis: An off-the-wall love story told in two voices. Straight-laced Sara dreams of two things: getting into her first-choice university and finding true love. Rock-loving slacker Tobey also dreams of two things: winning Battle of the Bands – and winning Sara. He is determined to make her fall in love with him. Tobey’s quirky wit and big blue eyes are hard for Sara to ignore. But can a scruffy rock-star wannabe ever win the heart of a girl who’s both beautiful and brainy? Sara and Tobey’s intense connection will have you rooting for them from the very minute they meet!

Additional: I think I ended up with the wrong book, Scholastic UK put a sticker on the cover “Contains Explicit Content” and I can’t find any. It’s not like I go hunting for these books but I was expecting there to be swearing, nudity or some dark subject matter but When It Happens doesn’t have any of that. There is one moment with Sara in her underwear, that’s it.

200words (or less) review: When It Happens is a cute love story told by Sara and Tobey, neither is a particularly loveable character if I’m honest. While Tobey is quirky I thought Sara’s morale compass was somewhat dented. She is set up as an intelligent girl who doesn’t have a high opinion of the “in crowd” but she stays with Dave despite his actions and even when she starts fantasying about Tobey she is still with Dave!

I might be a little harsh but given the advertising by Scholastic I was expecting this emotional rollercoaster of a love story, when this book is more of the candy-cotton variety. There is nothing wrong with that, I really love those if I’m in the mood. There are pluses; the writing is good and Tobey’s friends are really entertaining.

When It Happens reminds me of a feel-good Sunday afternoon movie and if that’s what you want, then this book is the right choice for you.

Recommend it?

Not sure, I really wish I could say yes.
