Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

click meHow did I get the book?  I bought it.

Genre: Contemporary (Humour)

First Impression: Please cure my bad day.

Synopsis: The fifty contestants in the Miss Teen Dream pageant thought this was going to be a fun trip to the beach, where they could parade in their state-appropriate costumes and compete in front of the cameras. But sadly, their airplane had another idea, crashing on a desert island and leaving the survivors stranded with little food, little water, and practically no eyeliner.
What’s a beauty queen to do? Continue to practice for the talent portion of the program – or wrestle snakes to the ground? Get a perfect tan – or learn to run wild? And what should happen when the sexy pirates show up?
Welcome to the heart of non-exfoliated darkness. Your tour guide? None other than Libba Bray, the hilarious, sensational, Printz Award-winning author of A Great and Terrible Beauty and Going Bovine. The result is a novel that will make you laugh, make you think, and make you never see beauty the same way again.

200words (or less) review: This book is ridicules. I think it’ll either work for you or it won’t. In my case it worked, although I was surprised by how long it took me to read. Somehow Libba Bray seems to have crammed so many messages in that it feels like there is an additional 200 pages to the story.

I was never bored, but occasionally I had to put the book down to digest what I was reading. There are so many characters that it’s a bit of an overload at times. And for me, none of the girls were endearing enough really care about.

Beauty Queens takes everything about 3 levels beyond “You are kidding right” – at times I was laughing so much my sides hurt and the arrival of the Pirates pretty much sent me over the edge. Yes there is a lot of commentary on society but it feels rather valid.

This is the first Libba Bray book I’ve read and it won’t be my last. I thought Beauty Queens was awesome, hilarious and it will certainly be a book I’ll reread when I need cheering up.
However I can imagine that for some it just too over-the-top.

Recommend it?

  1. Yesss! I loved it too! I actually put it down on my first attempt, but I’m glad I gave it another shot. It’s hilarious 😛 I agree that there’s a ton of characters, but all of them had their own distinct characteristics so it was easier to understand them.
